Once students are settled, we expect them to wear the appropriate uniform (as detailed below).
Coming to class feeling neat and clean is important for students' confidence, and provides a sense of occasion beneficial to learning.
We are especially keen that students with long hair wear it out of their face, preferably in a bun (a tutorial can be found below).
From Grade 1 upwards students will require, alongside their ballet uniform, a specific character uniform.
To stay warm as we head into winter we request that students either place an order with Mrs Brewer for a BDA T-shirt,
and/or wear a cross-over cardigan in their uniform colour.
Please note- we know younger students are always growing and provide a secondhand shoe store on certain days during term. All proceeds go to charity.
OPTIONAL
while not allowed in exams, we are happy for older students to wear a NAVY cross-over skirt in class.
SHOES
Canvas Character shoes in BLACK with elastic across instep.
Available in two heel types, the low heel is recommended for Grades 1 & 2, and the Cuban heel for Grades 3 - 8
SKIRTS
BLACK Full circular skirt, approximately mid calf length, in cotton. Our preferred ribbon colours can be found here and here, but students are free to express some individuality.
Instructions for making your own skirt are available on request.

INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED FOUNDATION
Royal Academy of Dance uniform for vocational level exams is a simple sleeveless or capped sleeve leotard, with an optional matching short skirt.
For exams, BDA recommends students wear BLACK, and opt for leotard styles explicitly approved by the RAD website.
However, as vocational level classes are for older students we trust them to tastefully express individuality. When not preparing for an exam students may wear dancewear in class of ANY STYLE, ANY COLOUR, or indeed many colours!
(Shoes and tights, including pointe shoes, should be pink or match skin tone.)
This is also the case for our workshops and non RAD classes.
Links to dancewear providers are listed below.
T-SHIRTS (CONTEMPORARY)
We have now found a new t-shirt supplier.
Please email principal@brewerdanceacademy.com
for details, or collect an order form in class.
When boys first start with us we can sometimes be more lenient with uniform. However correct shoes are a must.

Grades 1-5
A pair of low heeled, laced canvas character shoes in BLACK will be required for exams.
Clean school shoes may be used as an alternative in early classes.
Some exercises and dances in the RAD syllabus require props. Here is a list of what students may need to acquire at each level.
Students of a certain age will be invited to start Pre-Pointe classes,
for these they may need:
A spiky massage ball or tennis ball.
A balance board and/or wobble board.
A toe band.
Therabands (ideally both easy and medium/hard strength).
A tea towel.
A yoga/dance mat
A Pilates ball or small cushion.
A notepad and pen.
Students should be barefoot. and wear a leotard with an optional ballet wrap skirt or tight exercise shorts. Hair should be tied into a bun (or other secure hairstyle). Students will NOT need to buy pointe shoes until explicitly indicated by their teacher, who will give clear advice about getting and caring for their first pair.
Similarly, students who are subsequently invited to Pointe classes via Zoom may need:
A tea towel
A squash ball
Therabands (ideally all strengths but medium is best)
A notepad and pen.
A mat to sit/stand on if the floor is cold or slippery (ideally dance-specific).
Information about what you require for Pointe or Pre-Pointe should be emailed to you ahead of your first class,
if you have any queries please email principal@brewerdanceacademy.com.
Once you have been given permission and advice for buying pointe shoes, you will need to sew on elastic and ribbons. The above video offers a tutorial on this.
You will also need to darn your point shoes. Any queries please speak to Mrs Brewer or email principal@brewerdanceacademy.com
